“Prophecy and speaking in tongues and revelation knowledge will eventually become useless. But love never fails; it will last forever!” – 1 Corinthians 13:8
Love is the primary attribute of God, for “God is love”, says the apostle John (1 John 4:8). In fact, if any Christian does not love, he really does not know God, for if he did he would manifest the love of God within him. Therefore, if you say that you are saved, born again, and belong to this or that church and do not know how to love, you are self-deceived.
The apostle John gives us an example: “If anyone with earthly possessions sees another brother or sister in need, but withholds his compassion from him or her, how can the love of God abide in him?” ( 1 John 3:17). Or, if you practice bigotry or hatred towards another person of a different skin color or culture, how can the love of God abide in you?
So you see, it doesn’t really matter if you have the gift of prophecy or the gift of speaking in tongues, or the gift of revelation knowledge, or this or that gift, and so on; if you don’t know how to love others, your gifts are useless!
Love is the ultimate test.
Supernatural gifts will eventually cease to operate in the future, but love will never cease, for God is love, and God is eternal. Love is the ultimate evidence that God lives within you. Love will exist forever – in this world, and the world to come.
There is nothing mercurial about love either (subject to sudden or alternating changes of mood or mind). It is not based on whims, feelings, or passing fancies. Love is rock-solid, steady, remaining at the same temperature at all times. It is always available to benefit the one that is loved, regardless of the circumstances.
Are you practicing love like this?
You should be; for that’s the kind of love God has for us. God’s love never fails, and our love towards God – and others- should never end.
